Advisory FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May
19, 2008 East
Baton Rouge Parish School System to Host One of the Largest Active
Shooter Training Sessions in the Country The
School System has recently completed the installation of a
first-of-its-kind security system at McKinley Middle Academic Magnet
School. The “Virtual Command Technology,” developed by NetTalon and
installed by Accel Protection & Technologies, LLC (located in
Acadiana), detects and notifies multiple first responders and off-site
monitoring centers of changes in site conditions in real time. Completed
in 2006, McKinley Middle Academic Magnet School is one of the newest
schools in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System. This
new technology will allow the City of Baton Rouge to be the first in the
nation to create a “Virtual Emergency Response Network” where
emergency services can, within seconds, view and tactically assess a
developing emergency in the school using mobile data computers and video
surveillance monitors. This
new state-of-the art security system allows McKinley Middle Academic
Magnet School to be networked directly to local law enforcement
agencies, as well as first responders. In
the event of an emergency, teachers can immediately contact law
enforcement agencies by pressing a wireless key fob. When the emergency
alarm is activated, law enforcement agencies can remotely pull up a map
of the school and view any developing situation. This new capability
signifies a significant change in emergency response and how schools and
colleges can be protected. In
addition to the installation of this security technology, McKinley
Middle Academic School has also been outfitted with “Safe Rooms”
though-out the school. These “Safe Rooms” are equipped with bullet
resistant locks and a signaling station that can be used by teachers to
speak directly to law enforcement officers during an actual emergency
situation. Integrated
video surveillance cameras will also give first responders the
opportunity to obtain a subject description before any law enforcement
agencies arrive at the school campus. Motion detectors strategically
placed throughout the school will also allow police to track the
perpetrator anywhere in the school. Once
operational, beginning in the 2008 – 2009 school year, McKinley Middle
Academic Magnet School will be one of the best protected schools in the
nation! Beginning
at 10:30 a.m. on May 29, 2008, the East Baton Rouge Parish
School System will commemorate the installation of this security system
by holding a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by the “Active
Shooter” demonstration and training session. This
demonstration and training session will be one of the largest and most
realistic “Active Shooter” exercise conducted to date in the country
and will include three local law enforcement agencies, the Baton Rouge
Police Department, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Department,
and the Louisiana State Police. In addition, the Baton Rouge Fire
Department and the East Baton Rouge Parish EMS will be participating as
first responders. Invited guests will experience a realistic
demonstration of the Virtual Command Technology through live video and
audio feeds. Four additional exercises will be conducted at the school
on May 30, 2008. McKinley
Middle Academic Magnet School is located at 1550 Eddie Robinson Drive,
Baton Rouge, Louisiana. ### Click
